Ceramic Ball Bearing are supplied with rings and balls made from zirconium dioxide (ZrO2). These  bearings are available as full complement (no cage) or with cages made from PEEK, PTFE or 316 stainless steel. These are non magnetic, non-conductive and highly corrosion resistant to most chemicals although ZrO2 bearings are not recommended for prolonged contact with steam. Full complement bearings or those with a 316 stainless cage can be used up to 400°C while bearings with a PEEK or PTFE cage can cope with temperatures of up to 250°C. For temperatures below -70°C, PTFE or 316 stainless steel cages are preferred. Standard radial play for full ceramic bearings is C3 but other clearances can be supplied to order.

ZKBMceramic bearings are available from stock in the UK open or with PEEK seals. Some sizes may also be available flanged. ZrO2 ceramic bearings are generally used for their extreme temperature capabilities, excellent corrosion resistance or non-magnetic properties. Other sizes can be supplied on request.

Ceramic bearing properties:

The light weight of the ceramic bearings denotes a faster motion forward, which is always preferable for the rider.

Moreover, the hard and smooth surface of the ceramic bearings results in minimal friction, which means reduced levels of resistance for the rider. Also, the surface contributes to a decrease in the vibrations while biking, which implies a smoother riding experience. Hence, also less exhaustion of the rider on longer tours.

Actually, research shows that ceramic bearings bring heartbeat down by 2-5 beats per minute, leading to power savings up to 10-12 watts.

Furthermore, another property of the ceramic bearings is that they do not rust resulting in a long durability.

Differences between ceramic bearings and steel bearings:

Both ceramic bearings and steel bearings contain many properties, and it is often up to the rider what they prefer to use.

Traditionally, riders in Tour de France and other grand tours rode steel bikes. However, the ceramic bearings have become more of a standard bearing as it has become available to the serious amateur rider because of the increased affordability and knowledge of the many advantages it includes.

Ceramic bearings are both lighter and harder than traditional steel bearings, resulting in less heat, and thus, less friction while riding. Also, the ceramic bearings require less maintenance and less lubrication compared to the steel bearings that require protection with rust inhibitor or oil.

The price of the two is rather different. Steel bearings cost less than ceramic bearings, however, the ceramic bearings have an increased durability, and last between 5 and 20 times longer than steel bearings.
